Fathers Day Tips

Here are some tips from the Wellsphere Health Portal to help your Dad be healthier.

These were put together by Erika Schwartz, MD, a general internist, an authority on preventive health, and a patient advocate.  She suggests these 12 easy, fun and effective ways to help improve Dad’s overall health and outlook on life, just in time for Father’s day.

Start a new tradition on Father’s Day – help Dad get and stay healthier.  There’s no better gift than health.

P    Take him for a morning walk after a healthy Father’s day breakfast (egg whites, berry smoothie, chicken sausage and Green tea).

P    Get him a set of 20 pound weights to use every day before dinner or at work, if that is feasible.

P    Get him a 5 pound bag of apples or other fruit and nuts he likes as snack basket he can enjoy every day for the next week.

P    Get him a six-pack of soda water to replace colas, other caffeinated drinks and beer.

P    Get him a muscle vibrator that will help relax his shoulders (a better after-work stress reliever than a cocktail)

P    Buy him golf lessons or a month’s membership at a gym

P    Find a walking or cycling group and join together (or just get him a bike)

P    Clear his work materials from his bedroom so he can get a better night’s sleep.

P    Get him a video on good nutrition

P    Go away for a weekend together on an activity trip (walking, boating, camping)

P    Line up his father or brother to engage in family-designated physical activity days.

And finally remember to....

Give him hugs

With these positive gifts you can help your Dad to stay with you longer.

Climbing films

Last night I was in Cockermouth watching a collection of films about climbing.  The climbers were explaining that one of the compelling things about the sport was the existence of doubt.  The doubt about whether or not it was possible to get to the top of the route that you decide to climb.  As you haven't climbed the route before you do not actually know exactly what lies ahead.  You don't know  how steep it is, how good the holds will be, how slippery or grippy it will be, how much effort it will need.  So although you might set out believing that you can get to the top there is always doubt.  And with that comes the fear.  However by overcoming the doubt and fear you can climb to  the top and feel the exhilaration of reaching that pinnacle of achievement.

Most people set goals and we don't actually know what does lie ahead for us, just like the climbers. However much you believe in your own success, you cannot control the world and those around you.  So there will always be room for doubt.  What will get you to the top is the willingness to just give it a go and see what happens.  The climbers fell off their routes lots of times last night but they didn't give up, they just got back on and tried again.

So when it looks like it might be going pear shaped, stay tied on to your rope and give it another go.
